Gnome for the Holidays Christmas Tablescape

Happy Holidays everyone! Thanks for stopping by to check out this month’s Christmas tablescape. Last month I talked about how I really wanted to play around with black but went in another direction (catch up on that here). When I was trying to figure out what to do for this year’s Christmas tablescape I had very little to go on at first so I decided to use that as my starting point and go for it with the black.

Christmas Tablescape: Gnome for the Holidays

As I mentioned last month, I really wanted to play around with using black on the table. If you haven’t noticed, my natural tendency is to pile on the color so I knew doing a darker Christmas tablescape would be challenging. With the recent popularity of black tableware, I was curious to experiment. I will confess, I didn’t use too much black but found a way to put my spin on it and am so in love with this festive, patterned filled table.

My first thought and idea for using black was to use black flatware. I found this great set at Target and loved it so much but was deterred by the price ($20 per place setting). When I shop for tablescape items I only purchase things I know I will use beyond shooting for a post. I love to entertain and set up the house to host 10 easily and more if need be. That being said, spending $200 just on flatware was a bit more than I planned so I opted to pass on that.

I’ve said it a million times that your best resource for entertaining and setting the table is to shop your house first. Once I realized how much the black flatware would cost, I did just that. I went back and pulled out this gold + white set I purchased a few months ago. It didn’t match my original vision but I was surprised at how much I loved it when I paired it with the black and green. It really lightened up the table and made it feel less heavy.

In between the flatware disappointment and figuring out the rest of the table, I found these adorable gnome napkin rings and these amazing green plaid melamine plates. I knew I had to work them in somehow because I just couldn’t stop thinking about them or let them go. I also knew I had to jump on the plates because they were the same great quality as the blue & pink gingham plates Target had this past spring and I’m still kicking myself for not grabbing a set of those. The blue ones went SO fast that by the time I decided to purchase them they were sold out in all CLT stores and online.

The only thing left to figure out was where I would use some black. I found these gorgeous black stoneware dinner plates and knew they would be perfect layered under the plaid but once again, disappointment set in. The curved side of the plate made it too small to use as a charger plate. The plates are the same size in diameter and not ideal for layering together. At that point, I gave up on the matte black trend and decided to open myself up to other possibilities.

After hours of shopping for replacements, I found these polka dot Kate Spade plates and these stripe chargers. I stumbled upon them on a recent trip to Hobby Lobby. I must have walked past them 100 times throughout the season but never noticed them until now. How fab do they look with the other prints?!

All of the other items came from my collection. These layered pine placemats have been more than valuable. The greenery is so versatile. It is great for spring or for Christmas; making each place setting look like it’s framed with a wreath. For the centerpiece, I collected a variety of trees I was using around the house. Each place setting was complete with the most adorable vintage tree ornaments that double as favors for my guests.

The cocoa bar was my final idea for this Christmas setup. I cannot wait to recreate it for my family next week. There is a secret family recipe that only my dad and I know how to make. The whole family loves it so we try to keep it flowing this time of year. With winter finally showing itself here in Charlotte, I knew it would be a fun addition to the setup. The cocoa mix + treats fill the cart. To keep it festive, I added in some presents and one more tree to tie it in with the table.

Let me say just one more time how excited I am to recreate this Christmas tablescape for my family. It just goes to show you that you can love things outside of your comfort zone. Sometimes I am nervous to try new things. I get nervous that I won’t like them or I’ll have wasted my time. I hope this has given you some ideas on what to do for your family gathering this year. If you do host or set a fabulous table, please send me photos via email or DM on instagram. I love seeing all of your creativity and how you make things your own. I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and cannot wait to start fresh in 2021!!

cheers!
