I don’t know about you but I’ve really come to love and look forward to my friend Laura’s virtual cookie exchange. It has been such a great way to share some of my favorite cookie recipes with my girlfriends while plumping up my own stash of recipes. Cookies are my favorite treat and a big hit across both my and Wes’s families. I’ve made some good ones over the past two years since my last virtual cookie exchange. It was hard to choose a favorite to share with you guys this year but this chocolate sugar cookie is the winner.
One of my favorite cookies has always been a nice, soft sugar cookie. I know it’s boring but sometimes a well-made sugar cookie hits the spot. I recently learned that chocolate sugar cookies are a thing and knew it was for me. I’ve been a little lazy with my holiday baking this year. I’ve been so busy prepping my jewelry company for the Girl Tribe Holiday Pop Up that I haven’t had much time for anything else. This batch of cookies is my first batch of treats and it has me excited for all the yummy things to come.
For this year’s cookie exchange, 9 of us have gotten together to share our favorite cookie recipes. If you aren’t familiar with how it works, no worries, it’s pretty simple. Each blogger has shared their cookie recipe in a post; just like this one. At the end of each post, there is a brief blurb about the next blogger and the cookie she is sharing. Click that link to go to the next recipe and repeat until you’ve collected all 9 recipes. As a cookie addict, trust me when I say you don’t want to miss any of the recipes or the bloggers.

Chocolate Sugar Cookie Recipe
Chocolate Sugar Cookie
Ingredients
Cookie Dough
- 1 1/2 Cups White granulated sugar
- 2 Cups All purpose flour
- 1/3 ⅓ Unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 tsp Baking powder
- 3/4 tsp Salt
- ¾ cup Unsalted butter, softened
- 2 Large eggs
- 1 tsp Vanilla extract
Frosting (optional)
- 3 Cups Powdered sugar
- 1 1/2 Tbsp Meringue powder
- 3/4 tsp Vanilla extract
- 1/4 tsp Almond extract
- Red & green food coloring gel
- Holiday sprinkles
Instructions
Cookie Dough
- Beat butter and sugar with an electric stand mixer on medium-high speed until light and fluffy.
- Add eggs and vanilla. Beat on medium until combined. Scrape the sides of the bowl as needed to ensure all ingredients are mixed.
- In a separate bowl, stir together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl.
- With the mixer on low speed, add flour mixture to butter mixture, beating until just incorporated.
- Shape dough into a disk and wrap tightly in plastic wrap. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours or up to 2 days.
Prepare the Cookies
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees
- With a rolling pin, roll chilled dough to 1/4-inch thickness on a lightly floured surface. Cut with desired shaped cutters, rerolling scraps as needed. If dough becomes warm and sticky, place in refrigerator for 15 minutes.
- Place cookies 2 inches apart on parchment paper-lined baking sheets, and chill 20 minutes.
- Bake in preheated oven until tops of cookies are dry to the touch, about 10 minutes.
- Cool on baking sheets 2 minutes then transfer to a wire rack to cool for 30 minutes.
Frosting
- Beat powdered sugar, warm water, and meringue powder with an electric stand mixer on medium speed until smooth and glossy.
- Add vanilla extract and almond extract, and beat until combined.
- Add up to 2 Tbsp. water, 1 tsp. at a time, until desired consistency is reached.
- Divide frosting between 2 small bowls. Tint 1 bowl of frosting with desired amount of red food coloring gel; tint remaining bowl with desired amount of green food coloring gel.
- Decorate cookies & finish with sprinkles as desired.
